Holy Cross Orthodox Mission Hospital is a Private Not for Profit facility established in the early 1960’s by the Uganda Orthodox Church.
The hospital is situated at Uganda Orthodox Church Headquarters at Namungoona along Kampala-Hoima Road, 6KMS from the City Center. By nature of its location, the facility is close to the central Business districts of Kampala and Wakiso. The Hospital has a five-year (2021-2025) Strategy which expresses our commitment to provide high-quality, patient-centered care without discrimination and acts as the framework to which we align our priorities and focus for the future as we advance our vision of becoming a Centre of excellence in delivery of health care services in Uganda and beyond.

Background & History

The hospital was established in 1960 through funds donated by the Greek students from the Holy Cross Greek School of Theology in Boston, USA, who among many for the first time attended the speeches of the late Christophoros Sebanja Mukasa (Sparta), who was holding the banner of African Orthodoxy, during his first mission visit to Greece in the Great city of Athens in 1959.

The key figure of the blessed memory behind the construction, growth and management of this hospital is the late Rev.Fr. Irineos Magimbi who was the longest serving priest of St.Nicholas Cathedral Parish from 1960 to 1997.

Re-known doctors like Dr. Demetrios Dimopoulos, a Cypriot visiting Physician  Dr. Elias Katumba, Dr. Samson Kisekka, Dr. Dimitrios Mumbaale and Dr.Olive Sentumbwe  served as Medical Directors of this hospital .

However, Dr. Dimitrios Mumbaale was the longest serving doctor from 1968 to 1990. He in the early 1980’s participated in the construction of an additional block named St.Dimitrios to cater for dental, X-ray services and pharmacy dispensary.

Dr. Olive Sentumbwe in the 1990’s participated in the securing of funds from UNDP to start up the in-patient department  including maternity services; and Rev. Fr. Anastasios Boyazis, a Greek –Cypriot, in early 2000 participated in securing funds from Greece and upgraded the entire hospital including the canteen.

The hospital is situated at Uganda Orthodox Church headquarters at Namungoona Hill along Kampala to Hoima road, 6km from the city centre. By nature of its location, it is close to the central business district of Kampala and Wakiso districts. It is also surrounded by several townships of Nakulabye, Kasubi, Nansana and borders the villages of Lubya, Kigobe, Lugala, Masanafu, Kawaala and Lubigi
