Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga passed away in 2021, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a tireless advocate for peace, love, justice, and human dignity. Throughout his life, he bravely spoke out against injustice and human rights violations, not only within the church but also in Ugandan society. His leadership extended beyond spiritual matters, contributing to the advancement of social development and youth empowerment in the country. During today’s commemoration, believers were reminded to embody the virtues of truth, humility, and courage, mirroring Archbishop Lwanga’s example. His dedication continues to inspire the promotion of justice and peace, not only among Orthodox Christians but within the broader Ugandan society. The day’s reflections also drew parallels with the Prophet Ezekiel, whose feast day coincidentally aligns with the day of Lwanga’s passing. Just as Ezekiel called for righteousness and justice, Lwanga lived out that mission in his ministry.
A special highlight of the event was Bishop Silvester Kisitu’s homily. He praised Metropolitan Jonah for his impactful leadership, particularly his efforts in fostering interfaith dialogue and unity within the church. In line with Lwanga’s philanthropic spirit, the Uganda Orthodox Church also launched the “Forefathers Education Fund” during the service. This initiative aims to continue his mission of supporting children’s education and ensuring the long-lasting impact of his work.
